Some years ago Miten and I were asked to contribute to a book called.. “How Do You Pray” by Celeste Yacoboni. So inspired by what I read about the Teyuna Mamos in a recent blog o..n the Teyuna Foundation website. The Mamos are the spiritual leaders of the Arhuaco, Kankuamo, Kogi and Wiwa people of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta region of Colombia. In this spirit, I offer up the Gayatri Mantra especially to our beautiful Mother Earth.Music for the Mamos is described as “not something they are creating, but a spiritual duty they must fulfil as an energetic offering for the land.” The Mamos explain how they hear the sounds of their music as a language the land can understand. A language whose melodies feeds the soul of the land and a language the Mamos are committed to keeping alive with the sounds of their watuhkus (flutes).They tell us, “Our music is our greatest money for the Earth, that is what she wants, we will play our music for the Mother because in the sounds are messages and feelings that only music can fully communicate.
